“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14
I’m sure over the course of the last 1o years I’ve read this scripture at some point. This morning the words leapt off the page. “a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.” Our new life as part of God’s family, as bothers and sisters to Jesus is not a far off and distant thing. When we sincerely accept Jesus Christ as our saviour, when we acknowledge that he stood in our place, died a death meant for us and total unjustified for him we become part of Jesus’s lineage. Our heritage is no longer just earthly. Good or bad we should no longer lay claim to things that are in our past. Poverty, wealth, addiction, abuse, greed, pedigree, divorce – they are no longer part of us. No, we now have a heritage that includes the Lion of Judah and all the promises of God. Praise the Lord!
As part of Jesus’ lineage we now have rights to an inheritance that far outweighs our earthly inheritance. We are given the Holy Spirit as a deposit on that inheritance. How many earthly inheritances work that way? If you are going to inherit something you typically have to wait a long time, usually until someone’s death before you receive what is meant for you. If you are set to inherit $2 million dollars from old Uncle Joe Bob or Aunt Sadie Mae’s mansion you can’t have it until it is no longer theirs. You can’t move in the west wing of the mansion until Aunt Sadie’s will says you can. You can’t go buy your own mansion with Uncle Joe Bob’s money because it isn’t yet yours.
Not so with our God. He has so much he wants to give us but we need not wait until we are in Heaven with him. He gives us the Holy Spirit as a deposit, a guarantee of what is to come. How awesome is that?!
Do I live like I have a deposit of my inheritance? Do I live each day knowing that the power of the Holy Spirit is in me? Do I spend my inheritance every day? The renewed grace we have day after day is part of our inheritance. Do I allow myself to receive that grace after a bad day? A bad moment? Do I worship him with all my heart, even in the hard times because he is here with me, in me and beside me? Sadly, my answer to this is not always yes. Actually it is mostly no.
Lord help us all to receive your inheritance now, right here on earth. Make your glory known to us. Forgive us for having such a wonderful guarantee of the life yet to come but not laying claim to it. Show us each day how to accept your grace and mercy and give the same to others. Show us how to live with our holy deposit and shine like a city on a hill. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Until Next Time,
